SCORE International’s
Sal Fish honored with Lifetime
Achievement Award at Off-Road Impact Trade Show
LAS VEGAS,
NV (February 8, 2005) -- The inaugural Off-Road Impact Trade Show & Conference, held
recently in Las Vegas, not only drew off-road celebrities, key buyers and media
to view the latest in the off-road market, the show also was also a platform
for the inaugural Off-Road Impact Lifetime Achievement Award. Sal Fish, President
and CEO of SCORE International was announced as the first-ever recipient of
this prestigious award.
“It’s really an honor to receive this award,” Fish said. “I
do what I do because I love the sport and to be recognized for it is really
tremendous. I feel fortunate to make a living at something I enjoy so much. I
started out
driving in a desert race in Baja with a co-worker having never stepped foot
in an off-road vehicle. I guess something struck a cord and 35 years later, here
I am,” Fish continued.
Fish sees desert racing
as more than a sport. Ever the visionary, he views it as a way of life and
has always applied the “greater
good” philosophy
to every aspect of SCORE International’s role in desert racing. Fish
has lent a helping hand to environmental projects including the Greening of
Baja
and Tread Lightly. He has expedited and secured donation of ATVs, full-size
off-road vehicles and ambulances to various Mexican agencies and arranged for
a donated
ambulance to be brought from Baltimore to a village in Baja.
“Sal has contributed so much to desert racing over the span of his long
career, Marty Fiolka, Group Editorial Director said. “We thought long
and hard about who really encompasses the passion of the sport and his name
kept
coming up. I am honored to work with him, race in his series and present him
with this award.”
Having first raced in Mexico in 1970, Fish started his entrepreneurial career
in desert racing in 1973 when the late Mickey Thompson, founder of SCORE International,
recruited him. In 1986 the team of Fish and then-chief financial officer Ted
Johnson, acquired full ownership of the company. Since then, he has grown the
company and has worked a lifetime to establish SCORE International as the premier
race organization in the history of desert racing.
SCORE International, based
in Los Angeles, is in its 32nd year as the world’s
foremost desert racing organization. SCORE continues to be the standard by
which the sport is measured and to which numerous fledgling desert racing organizations
strive to reach. SCORE International class and racing rules are the foundation
upon which the sport started and upon which others continue to use for their
organizations.
SCORE produces the five-race
SCORE Desert Series. Round 2 of the 2005 series
will be the 19th Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, Feb. 25-27, in San Felipe, Baja
California, Mexico. New on this year’s SCORE calendar is the SCORE Las
Vegas Terrible’s Cup I, July 28-30 on a man-made 1.5-mile ‘chunk
of Baja’ course at the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The non-series
special event will feature the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck division, the unlimited
Class 1 for open-wheel desert race cars and the SCORE All-Stars—many
of the top racers from SCORE’s other car and truck classes.
